DISCERNING THE WAY FORWARD

JW DISCERNMENT OF AFFILIATION PROCESS

The John Wesley United Methodist Church must decide on a future affiliation based on basic values and theological views due to the continuous division occurring in the larger United Methodist denomination. The John Wesley congregation is taking stock of practicing 50 years of service grounded Wesleyan Methodist Christianity as it stands at the nexus of change. Our congregation is looking to God for guidance and resources as it courageously enters a new phase of our mission. As each individual member and the church community discerns what affiliation matches our mission and vision, there are numerous details to take into account.

PRAY

Searching for the voice of the Holy Spirit is the first step in discernment. Start a new daily routine by participating in the 90 Days of Prayer. Pastor Marty would like to call everyone to use the following plan for 90 days of prayer beginning through October 14.  DOWNLOAD THE PRAYER GUIDE

UNDERSTAND

Understanding who you are and how it fits into a denomination is a key part of discernment.  All members of our church need to understand the beliefs of Wesleyan Methodist Christianity and how it is expressed in relation to our mission and vision.  Compare and contrast fundamental Christian doctrines here. To make a wise choice, all of us need to first try to understand and comprehend. Attend the JW Discernment Sessions to help with this part of the process.

AFFIRM

The main cause of separation within the larger UMC denomination is theological disagreements. In our quest to understand and listen to the Holy Spirit, we need to affirm where we fit into the larger denomination and the local church.  You will need to personally affirm where you are in relation to our Wesleyan beliefs and practices on a larger level.  Foster conversation with your pastors and other members within your Sunday classes, bible studies, personal meetings or through email.  A healthy decision-making process includes respectful conversation.

CHOOSE

In the end, you will have to choose for yourself were you to align as a member of John Wesley.  Your personal alignment might not affect the church’s affiliation, but it will be helpful in the church’s final discernment process.  A process of discernment of affiliation does not always end in a vote of disaffiliation.  You are encouraged to discern your desired affiliation, so you know where you fit on the issues facing our denomination.
